Keyboard Is Skipping Letters When Filling In Online Forms

I’ve got the strangest problem with the keyboard on my PC that just cropped up since yesterday.  I’m on a Dell running Vista.  The keyboard is wired, not wireless.  When I type in an email, Word, or text editor, I have no problems.  But when I type in a web based application like WordPress (like I’m doing now writing this post), or filling in online fields like a form or a search box, or leaving a comment on someone’s blog, my keyboard, including the spacebar, skips.  So I end up with sporadic missing letters and spaces.  It’s like it’s stuttering.

I have scanned my computer to death with McAfee and Spybot Search & Destroy.  This computer is clean as a whistle.  McAfee and Windows are all up to date.

Has anyone experienced this problem and were you able to figure out what was causing it?

UPDATE:  I found the problem.  I was infected, infected, infected to the max with Trojans.  I also started having problems with redirects on Google when I clicked on a listing.  Turns out I had a Google redirect virus.  I ran MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware and now both problems are solved.

Maybe something in your browser. Upgrade to the latest version and try turning off any plugins or toolbars you’ve got installed.

If that doesn’t work.. perhaps it is a dodgy keyboard but you only notice when you’re typing on the web because of subtle differences in the way you hit the keys (sounds silly, but generally when word processing we tend to concentrate more on the task at hand and press more firmly. At least, that’s what I do).

I would recommend you to try using another key board to know where the problem lies. If the problem persists, call in a computer expert and get your system upgraded.

@Afro, it’s not the keyboard. My post already stated that. It only happens in web-base applications. I’ve narrowed it down to IE add-ons. When I run IE with add-ons off, I don’t have any problems. When they’re back on, I have problems…like right now while I’m typing this reply. Today I’m going to disable all of them and then one by one reenable them.

Your problem dumbfounds me. I read your answer to one of the comments. Probably, disabling all the add-ons and then re-enabling them singly at a time could help.

Missing letters and spaces! It appears that the keyboard has acquired magical prowess of some kind. So, figured out any solution?

  • Admin says:

@Issac, I have disabled all add-ons. I have also run IE without add-ons from System Tools and I still have the problem. Firefox doesn’t have the problem, but I don’t like using Firefox unless I have to. So it’s an IE thing and I still haven’t found the problem.

  • Try using a different browser or try typing the text in a notepad first, if it is still slipping then definitely the keyboard is at fault. Also, if you are really adamant to use the same keyboard and the same browser, then you should try typing it on notepad and then copy-paste it in the browser. Hope this helps you.

@Chris, go back and read the post again. I did try a different browser and it’s not “definitely the keyboard”. The symptoms didn’t make any sense for it TO be the keyboard. Scroll up and look at my update. My computer was full of malware and trojans. Ok, since I solved the problem, I’m closing comments on this post.
