Google Gmail Slows Down My Computer
I use Google Gmail, but not as a main email account. I only use it when I need to supply an email address for something where I feel there is a risk of betrayal from the person receiving it. I keep my real email addresses close to my chest.
It behooves me how my real email address gets around, but I have an idea. One possible place is when making blog comments. I think some of those blog owners don’t give a rat’s ass and they sell them for fun and profit. People, if you make blog comments, it would be wise not to use your real addy. Ok, I’m getting off topic.
I work on my computer all the ding dong day. I know Windows has tons of shit running in the back ground, but there are times when it really slows down – sorta like when McAfee antivirus is updating, but it’s not.
When you run Gmail, you have the option to run the the Gmail notifier in the background and send the blue envelope icon to the status bar in the lower right corner of your screen.
TIP: Gmail is not a mission-critical application for me so when my computer starts to runs like a slug for no apparent reason, I right-click on the blue Gmail icon and click Exit and I immediately get an increase of speed. BAMM, Bob’s your uncle.

Are you sure it’s Gmail causing this? I think a lot of people suffer from these issues but the hard part is genuinely tracking down what is causing it, I am trying to resolve similair issuesmyself, everything seems to be so hungry on the RAM these days.
@Paul, good question and in all fairness, perhaps I should say “In my case, ‘something with regards to having the Gmail notifier running was the problem’”. I know, nebulous, huh. For all I know it could have been a spammer sending some huge attachment to the account and not a Gmail problem, per se. However, when I closed the notifier, I saw an immediate increase in speed. But like I said, that account is not mission critical so I didn’t investigate it. It doesn’t happen very often, but on the occasions that it has happened, I always got relief from closing the notifier.
I don’t really rely on it.
Google Talk is on auto-login for me so if there’s any new email, I get updated through it, however I agree that having 2-3 email addresses is necessary and I use my other email whenever commenting on blogs so to make sure I don’t get any spam on my main account
. I better now make sure to clean up my other email as well because spam is continuously rising to it.
However sometimes I feel that gmail slows my browser down, lol I hate it but what to do. Have you tried out Zoho btw? It’s good really. You can get everything on it with a free account and you can add up all your email accounts there as well. Try it out. One of the best sites I’ve seen regarding cloud computing.
@Jerry, Never heard of Zoho, but I just took a quick look. DAMN! I like what I’m seeing. Thanks for the tip. I see a few things in there that I can start using right away. One of them is the scheduler. I always have to stay on top of myself or I get sidetracked.
I have found that video slows down your computers alot. I put all my videos and photos on an additional drive and that works.
I have a number of gmail accounts but what I have done is I get them coming straight into Outlook and then I deal with them from there, seems to do the trick for me. As far as slowing things down I am always on the lookout for anything that may slow my PC down, and I make sure that I dont have any conflicting programs running or indeed any registry problems through regular scans.
I too experience the same, whenever I logged into Gmail (via Internet Explorer) and attempted to read my email, it basically temporarily froze my computer. This now happens every time I read an email – it’s incredibly frustrating. Any hints or ideas? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
THE LAST LITTLE WHILE MY GMAIL HAS BEEN INCREDIBLY SLOW OPENING THINGS, AND MOVING FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER…LIKE FROM CONTACTS TO INBOX, ETC…IT WAS NEVER LIKE THAT BEOFRE, IT WAS ALWAYS QUICK, ND NOW IT IS SLOW, AND THAT IS ON MY PC
MY HUSBAND SAYS THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING ON HIS LAP TOP AS WELL, SAYS IT IS VERY SLOW TO MOVE AROUND AND TAKES SEVERAL SECONDS TO OPEN AND SEND STUFF?!!!!
