Samsung R451C TracFone Straight Talk

straighttalkI received the oddest damn postcard in the mail today from AT&T.  It was about my landline.  The card said a change of address was done on my account last Wednesday and that this card was being sent to the old address.  I was looking at my wireless account online last week, but not my landline.  That’s a whole different account and login.  I didn’t go there.

Maybe I better check…I just logged in and my mailing address was not changed.  Hmmm.  Is this a way of getting me to call them up so they can sell me more stuff I don’t need?  Is AT&T on a fishing expedition?  Maybe I’ll give them a call tomorrow and ask them what the fuck.  Then when they say, “Is there anything else I can help you with?”, and they ALWAYS do, I’ll ask how much will it be to terminate my cell phone contract so I can switch to MetroPCS with unlimited everything for only $45/month.

Speaking of cell phones, I was in Walmart yesterday and they have these new TracFone “Straight Talk” plans.  I’ve never seen them before, but maybe I wasn’t paying attention.  My store had three phones to select from, all reasonably priced.  I had my eye on the $99.98 Samsung R451C.  (The “C” means it’s on the CDMA network.)

So you buy the phone and call a number to activate it.  There is no activation fee.  That’s sweet.  You can keep your existing phone number or get a new one.  One word of caution, though.  If you leave the phone inactive for 30 days, that is without a plan, you’ll lose your number and you’ll have to get a new number when you spark it up again.

They have two monthly plans.  $30/month for 1000 minutes, 1000 texts, 30mb of data, and free calls to 411.  That’s one HELL of a deal.

I’m paying $39.99 for my piece of shit plan from AT&T and that’s just plain talking.  No texts, web, email, nothing.

The other TracFone plan is $45/month for unlimited calls, texts, mobile web access, and 411 calls.

Now here’s the cool part, no contracts.  When your plan runs out, just pay for either plan every 30 days to keep your account active.  If you find that you really don’t need the unlimited plan, then just pay for the $30 plan the next time around.  There are no rollover minutes, though.

No fees for any of this stuff:  activation, reactivation, cancellation, daily access, roaming or overage fees.

Did you see that?  NO DAILY FEES!  Other pre-paid phone plans charge you a daily fee when you use the phone.  I’ve seen fees as high as $3/day.  Damn, Gina!  Here are some more stats.
